Collateral Damage

collateral damage:  injury inflicted on something other than an intended target

I held out hope all this time that Zachary didn’t do this to me. In the dark places of my mind it seemed better if she did it. Now I know that is beyond improbable and is actually impossible that she did this. I have to face the fact that Zachary did this to me, whether it was accidental or intentional. Except he didn’t do this to me, he did it to himself. I am merely collateral damage. Clearly he did not pause to think of all the collateral damage his actions would cause. He didn’t pause to consider the ripple effect that would be everlasting for so many of us that love him. We were all merely collateral damage.
